Assessment of student progress in CBL happens largely through workplace-based assessments (“WBAs”) that help to inform the student’s overall progress toward the core competencies of our program. Knowledge of the conditions that CBL “patients” present with is assessed through multiple choice questions on exams. When a student misses a CBL session, a makeup assignment must be completed to demonstrate understanding of the missed content.

Work-based assessments (WBAs)

WBAs are completed by facilitators multiple times per term. Prior to the first WBA completion, facilitators are expected to briefly check in with each student to give feedback. Meetings are not required at other times during the term unless:

  • A student requests a meeting.
  • The facilitator has concerns regarding the student’s progress
  • There is a concern regarding professionalism.

Previous facilitators have found it helpful to keep notes throughout the sessions so feedback in the WBAs is detailed and specific. Self-directed student goals set at the beginning of the term can be used as an adjunct to the WBA to guide feedback.
